If you were to ask me a while ago “Who are you?” I would probably have replied with something along the lines of “I’m a brother/ I’m a skater/ I’m an E.M.T.” All of which aren’t necessarily wrong answers, but is that really who I am? Ask yourself today, “Who am I?” You might find yourself answering that question with what you do or what you like to do. For example “I am an athlete” or “I’m a high-school student”. Or maybe you don’t know how to define yourself. |
Here is my point:
We shouldn’t be defined by what we do.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
1 Peter 2:9 NIV
What does that mean for us? Christ gave us an identity when we received Him into our lives. We don’t have to define ourselves by what we do. Good thing too! Think about this: if I say I am a skater, what would happen then if I lose the use of both of my legs? Or if I am a ‘high school student, what happens then when I graduate? I would be devastated, thinking all that I am is coming to an end. If we define who we are by what we do, then we become a slave to that in order to keep our image and identity.
I think this is even true for those of us who still have no idea who we are. You may find yourself wondering about the future. “What do I want to be when I grow up?” or “What college do I want to go to?" Just remember and focus on who you are in Christ: A CHOSEN PEOPLE.
We’re a chosen people…CHOSEN PEOPLE. Think about that. Chosen by whom? GOD, our creator. This is who you are if you have accepted Christ in your life as King. Everything else (when not put into this perspective) is just a distraction. As you focus your life around who you are in Christ and your relationship thereof, you’ll find who you are and God will use that to bring Him glory through who you are and who you become. You will also receive satisfaction as you draw closer to Him. (Psalms 37:4)
Peace to you and yours
